Launceston

The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Launceston enters the story through two different journeys: Jackie Maguire goes there searching for his wife and youngest child, while Dorrigo Evans arrives there to attend high school on a scholarship. One journey ends without an answer; the other opens a new stage in Dorrigo’s life.

A Search Without Resolution

Jackie Maguire’s wife had taken the train to Launceston with their youngest child and had not returned. Jackie followed by mail train and looked for them in the city, but could find neither. Launceston is thus the destination of his search, not a confirmed account of where or why they disappeared. His unanswered account is heard while Dorrigo is at home with his mother, connecting the place to a childhood scene shaped by another family’s loss.

Dorrigo’s Schooling

At twelve, Dorrigo was the only member of his family to pass the Ability Test and receive a scholarship to Launceston High School. He was old for his year. On his first day, he went at lunchtime to the school’s top yard, a flat space of dead grass, dust, bark, and leaves beneath large gum trees. There he watched older boys gather in two rough rows for kick to kick, a game organized around kicking the football across the yard and leaping to catch it.

Narrative Significance

The two episodes give Launceston contrasting associations. For Jackie, it is a place where an urgent search produces no reunion or explanation; for Dorrigo, it is where exceptional school success carries him beyond the limits of his family’s experience. His first day at the high school also introduces the spectacle of the older boys’ game, an early encounter with the physical contest surrounding the football mark. Launceston therefore marks both an unresolved absence and the beginning of Dorrigo’s formative education.
